Discover Meterik and its surroundings

Get to know the Peel region. Once there was on the border of
North Brabant and Limburg have a raised moor area of up to 30,000 hectares. in the loop

literally, because peat was extracted here until the twentieth century. Now
the landscape consists of a mix of arable and grasslands, forests and some
remnants of the old raised bog area.

The route takes you through the Schadijkse
forests. In the past, extensive moors lay here that were soded by farmers to make manure. Sods created large sand drifts that were curbed at the end of the nineteenth century by planting Scots pines.

You will pass through several typical  Limburg towns, such as cozy Horst. You also drive through America in  the late nineteenth century arose as a peat workers and heath mining village. The  well-known Limburg band Rowwen Hèze considers this village its home.

Just past America you drive towards the Mariaveen. Due to the peat extraction, the landscape here is dotted with peeling canals, peat pits and ponds. Pipestraw and heather plants grow on the open plains. Here you will experience the peace and space that makes this  region so popular with cyclists.

Also around the pleasant Sevenum, whose center has recently undergone a makeover, the  landscape consists of a mixture of forests, stream valleys and grasslands. Here you drive through the nature reserve De Heesbeemden, where a wet forest of alder and willow alternates with small meadows and pools. You run the risk of spotting a deer or bird of prey, they feel perfectly at home in this beautiful area.
