Beersel is a nice place, where you will find the castle of Beersel, one of the rare examples of military architecture from the Middle Ages in Belgium. You should definitely check this out if you are in the area, because even today it still looks like a medieval fortress. The wide fortified castle walls and the three roofed castle towers are truly a picture. But there is also a lot to discover in Alsemberg and this is where you set off today. In Alsemberg, for example, you will find the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, a church built in late Gothic style with all the characteristics of Brabant 14th-century architecture. There is a Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century and a gilded devotional statue of Our Lady in the center of the choir. The Wilcharmuseum is also located in the heart of the village, where you can learn everything about the artist Wilchar. He was born as Willem Pauwels and lived in Alsemberg from 1960 until his death in 2005. Because of resistance activities in the Second World War, Wilchar was imprisoned in the Breendonk concentration camp. This period left a mark on his life forever; his art is therefore an indictment against war and injustice. You will find exceptional lithographs about the concentration camp in Breendonk, political posters and socially critical panels. You make a nice round outside the village, on a nice dirt road along the forest. Just before the end of the route, beer lovers should take a detour from the route, because you will pass right behind the Visitor Center'De Lambiek\\\': the starting point for discovering various Lambic breweries. Here you will learn all about the artisanal brewing process of lambic beers, an age-old tradition in which the beer ferments spontaneously and matures in wooden barrels.
