Description
This cycle route takes you over the old seabed, but you don't have to worry that you really have to cycle through the water. In the seventeenth century, two old inland lakes were drained here and transformed into flat, fertile farmland that is perfect for cycling.
Polder windmills in Low Holland
You can see the history of the area in the polder windmills that can be found here. These mills pumped the water out of the polder for a long time and moved it to the higher ring canal. Have you become curious how exactly that works? Then take a look at the Museum Mill in Schermerhorn. Around the former Schermer Island you will find dikes that were built here in the twelfth century. Nowadays these dikes form a dividing line between the old land with its winding rivers and historic villages and the austere geometric new land.

During this cycling tour you will also pass De Beemster polder and three forts of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. In the village of Graft-De Rijp you will find plenty of memories of the old fishing days, when adventurous herring and whalers sailed here via the Beemstermeer towards the Zuiderzee. Enough old Dutch history to be found on this route. The start and end point of the route is in Purmerend.
