Enjoy in and around Leopoldsburg

Forest areas
The starting point of the route is at Tourism Leopoldsburg. From here you cycle towards the Pijnven, a former heath and drifting sand area that was planted with conifers from 1904 for the production of mining wood. Het Pijnven is located in the heart of the Bosland, one of the largest forests in Belgium. You will also pass typical chapels on the route: the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin and the St. Bernard Chapel. The kilometers fly by along the rippling water.

Cozy Leopoldsburg
At the end of the route you return to Leopoldsburg. Here you will find several cozy cafes and restaurants where you can be pampered with city specialties such as Kampse Soldatenkoek and a Kampse Borrel. Not so adventurous? You can of course also go for a portion of Belgian fries with a beer.

Back in time
In 1835, King Leopold I established a barracks on the site where Leopoldsburg is now located. This barracks was intended as a defense against the Netherlands. You can still see this military history in various places in the city. Museum Kamp van Beverlo, for example, is located in the former military hospital that was located here in 1850. Models, old photos, documents and old objects tell you more about the origins of the Camp of Beverlo and Leopoldsburg. You can also take a guided walk through the city from the castle, where you will learn more about the history of Leopoldsburg. Then visit the military church, which was sold to the municipality in 1968.
