Description
The outskirts of Antwerp form a beautiful green backdrop for countless bike rides. This route takes you through small towns in the vicinity of Antwerp and past two centuries-old abbeys that are definitely worth a visit. In short, there is plenty to see along the way.
Admire two abbeys
The first kilometres of this route run along the Antwerp-Turnhout canal. This is the ideal environment to get going and at the same time let your thoughts run free. A little later you will pass the Abbey of Our Lady of Nazareth. This abbey has been inhabited by the sisters of the order of Trappistines since 1950. Admire this abbey or cycle on to the next abbey on the route: the Abbey of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Westmalle. Here, among other things, abbey cheese and the famous Westmalle beer are made. You can go to the porter of the abbey on weekdays to buy cheese. You will then cycle through the Drijhoekbos and the Zoerselbos.
Floreal Camping Het Veen
At the end of the route you will arrive at Floreal Camping Het Veen in Brecht. This comfortable campsite is perfect for an overnight stay. In the accompanying bistro-tapas bar you can enjoy a delicious Mediterranean snack and a drink. From here you can also follow route 181390.
A trip to Antwerp
The city of Antwerp is not on this route, but you can of course drive there after an active day on the bike. Go shopping in the cozy center of Antwerp, sit down on one of the many terraces or immerse yourself in the history of the city by viewing beautiful centuries-old buildings. The perfect way to end a day in nature in a cultural way!
