Description
The former mining region in Belgian Limburg is rich in beautiful nature reserves. Around the towns of Koersel, Zolder and Heusden you cycle through a varied landscape of vast forests, heathlands and stream valleys. This area will be anything but boring.
Historical sights
On the Koerselse Heide you will pass the chapel of Our Lady of the Staak, a place of pilgrimage where the legend goes that Mary caused a source of healing water to spring up there in 1826. Near Zolder you will see an old mine slag heap, an accumulation of stone waste that is created as a by-product of underground mining. You can climb this mountain to see the beautiful view at the top. The route takes you a few kilometers along the towpath along the Albert Canal. Along the way you will also pass the Bolderberg, a wooded hill that is millions of years old.
