Description
The former mining region in Belgian Limburg is rich in beautiful natural areas. Around the towns of Koersel, Zolder and Heusden you cycle through a varied landscape of vast forests, heathlands and stream valleys. This area will not bore you at all.
Historical sights
On the Koerselse Heide you will pass the chapel of Onze Lieve Vrouwe aan de Staak, a place of pilgrimage where legend has it that in 1826 Mary made a spring with healing water erupt. Near Zolder you will see an old mine spoil heap, an accumulation of stone waste that is created as a by-product of underground mining. You can climb this mountain of spoil to enjoy the beautiful view at the top. The route takes you a few kilometres further along the towpath along the Albert Canal. On the way you will also pass the Bolderberg, a wooded hill that is millions of years old.

The starting and ending point of the route is at the tavern De Uitkijktoren in Koersel-Kapelle. Here you can enjoy a cup of coffee, a refreshing drink or a delicious meal in a peaceful wooded environment. On a nice day you can enjoy the sun on the cozy terrace. Children can enjoy themselves in the large playground or at the mini golf, the trick pin courses or the splash pond.
