River route Lek and Rhine

Along the Lek and Rhine it is beautiful to make kilometers. You also come through the Kromme Rijnstreek, a region with many orchards and beautiful old towns.

Work on the Groeneweg
At PAND Pannenkoek Restaurant & IJssalon you can enjoy something tasty, so that you get on your bike with enough energy. It is then wonderfully quiet cycling through the polders of the Eiland van Schalkwijk. Between the fruit trees you can see Werk aan de Groeneweg, a position with earthen walls and casemates. From the dike you have a beautiful view over the Lek and the floodplains. On the Beusichemsedijk you can still see the Limietpaal.

Rhine and Lek
In Wijk bij Duurstede you can still experience something of the fortress history when you look at the restored castle ruins with its square keep from 1270. The historic city center has many monuments anyway. Such as the Rhine and Lek: a corn mill from 1659 that stands on a city gate! From a distance you can already see the church tower of Cothen, a charming town that enjoys a protected village view. Through the polders you cycle via Houten back to Schalkwijk.

The Limit Post or Half Hour Post
For centuries, a limit pole stood at the Beusichemsedijk to mark the border between the county of Culemborg and Buren. According to local tradition, this pole was taken home as a souvenir by someone from abroad at the end of 1993. A replica was placed in June 2001. The limit pole is popularly known as the Half-hour pole. From this point, it was a half-hour walk to Culemborg and Beusichem.
