Imagine yourself far from civilization in Dwingelderveld National Park. This is the largest swampy heathland in Western Europe. You can enjoy cycling along rolling heathland, shifting sand, forest and dozens of lakes and fens. Rainwater here does not penetrate into the ground through an impermeable layer below the soil surface. In this way more than sixty fens and heath lakes have been created spread over the area. In summer, cap and shrub heather colors the area beautifully pink and purple. After your round through the Dwingelderveld, stop off at LUDIEK food and sleep in Havelte for a nice lunch. Then you cycle back through the woods of the Holtingerveld. Here and there, craters in the ground bear witness to a bombing raid on a German airfield that was located here during the Second World War.
