Part of this route takes you along the river Linge. Here you can gaze over the water and relax, but there are also beautiful historic monuments next to the river. The route also goes through Leerdam and some surrounding villages.

GeoFort
The route starts at Fort at the Nieuwe Steeg. This fort was built in 1879 as part of the New Dutch Water Line and it consists of a bombproof barracks, a canal with a drawbridge and a guardhouse. After the Second World War, the fort lost its function and today it is set up as an educational attraction in the field of cartography and navigation under the name GeoExperience. At the accompanying GeoFort café you can enjoy a delicious meal or a cup of coffee before or after your bike ride.

Sights along the Waal
A little further you will find Fort Vuren. This fort was built in 1844 to prevent enemies from moving west together with Fort Loevestein. On the banks of the Waal, you cycle further to the Blauwe Reiger windmill in Haaften. This flour mill was built in 1856 to replace a post mill that burned down the year before. This mill is still used to grind animal feed on a voluntary basis.

Glass city Leerdam
On the banks of the Linge lies 'glass city' Leerdam. The town was founded in 1143 and was then called 'Ter leede'. In 1382 Leerdam was granted city rights. In the eighteenth century, the wood and glass industries took off and the city became more prosperous. This rich history can still be seen in the old buildings, such as the Grote Kerk, the museum Het Hofje by Mevrouw Van Aerden and the remaining city walls. From Easter to the end of September you can admire the glassblowers from home and abroad and their work in the Glass Center. Leerdammer cheese has also become a well-known product over the years.
