In Drenthe you can enjoy numerous vast nature reserves that form an oasis of peace and space. This route takes you through the area Het Holtherzand, part of the extensive heathland area Scharreveld. You also cycle through the towns of Westerbork and Beilen. Enough to see along the way!
Through green areas to Westerbork
At the start of the route you cycle through the nature reserves of the Plan Goudplevier. Get to know drifting sands, moors, fens, peat bogs, grasslands and small-scale forest areas as you head for Mantinge and Balinge. You then cycle on to Westerbork and Zwiggelte through the Holtherzand. In the past, this nature reserve was mainly used as a place to graze sheep herds from Westerbork, Holthe and Bruntine and now you can enjoy cycling there. Be sure to visit the Memorial Center Westerbork. Here you can learn more about the lives of victims and survivors of the former concentration camp.
Grand Café - Hotel Martensplek
From Zwiggelte you cycle through green areas to Beilen. Eventually you will arrive at the starting point of the route at Grand Café - Hotel Martensplek. Here you can go for a well-deserved snack and a drink, but also for an overnight stay. From here you can also follow route 178509, 115916 and 542928 if you want to explore the area further.
The Makkum mill
Just outside Beilen you will find the Molen van Makkum. This mill was built in 1906 as a replacement for the last standard mill in Drenthe. With the construction of a new mill, the octagon of a polder mill from De Groeve was given a new use. After construction, the ground sailer sustained significant storm damage several times. After the hood and the blade cross were blown off in 1993, the mill was thoroughly restored in 1997. Grain is still ground with the mill.
