The Zuidlaardermeer is also called the Wolfsbargermeer and it is 540 hectares in size. The lake and the 120 hectares of surrounding overlands are a Natura 2000 area and therefore fall under European protection. The lake is thousands of years old and was created by the interaction of ebb and flow on the peat in the area. Apart from a few channels, the water is very shallow, but as a water lover there is still plenty to do at the lake. You can relax or be active on and around the water. Marinas have been built on the lake and you can enjoy sailing on the Zuidlaardermeer.

Authentic dolmens
The cycle route, which starts and ends at B&B Schipborg in Zuidlaren, also leads you past various dolmens. Hunebed D04 and Hunebed D03 are hidden between two cute old farms, along a romantic sand path. They look quite messy, but the stone graves, which together are called the Hunenborg, are quite large. Because the covering stones of the dolmens are located in the cellars, they have an authentic appearance. Route 178507 has the same starting point as this route. Spend a comfortable night at B&B Schipborg and the next day take the route towards Assen and Drentsche Aa National Park.

Another beautiful stop along the route is the Boezemvriend polder mill, which is also called the'Molen van De Groeve\\\'. The mill, built in 1871, drained the Zuidlaren polder. However, in the 1930s it lost all its significance as a pumping station, because at that time people switched to draining the polder with an electric motor. In 1962 and 1990, restorations were carried out on the mill, making it suitable for grinding again. The mill is now operated by a few volunteers. Fun fact is that De Boezemvriend is the only octagonal polder mill in Drenthe.

NB; You can take a ferry on this route, which only runs between April 1 and October 1.
