The Grote or St. Nicolaaskerk dominates on the northwestern outskirts of Edam. This hall church in late Gothic style was started in the first half of the 15th century. The church building, plus tower and portals, was completed around 1518. In 1601, a major fire destroyed the hoods and much of the interior. Because of its wealth and large donations, the church building was quickly restored. The 'new' 32 stained glass glasses come from the period 1602 -1627, a heyday of stained glass and are executed in renaissance style. From about 1590 to 1830 there are burials in the church. Napoleon forbade it. Afterwards, burials took place in the monumental cemetery adjacent to the church.

Fort at Edam is the most northeastern point of the Defense Line of Amsterdam and it is part of the North Front. Like the other forts on the north side, this fort was built between 1908 and 1913 and had an occupation of 255 men. This is relatively late, but that has a logical explanation: the front on the north side of Amsterdam was easy to defend because it could be flooded well. So this side was not a priority for the fort builders of the Ministry of War. Partly due to the work of the volunteers, the fort is now one of the best preserved parts of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The fort's task was to close off and defend the former Zuiderzeedijk both north and south of Edam. The fort also served to shield the sea lock behind it. This lock was an important inlet point for the water that was needed for the inundation. The site on the front side, polder de Zeevang, was flooded.

De Joodse begraafplaats

A small Jewish cemetery has been preserved along the Oorgat in Edam, near the place where the Oosterpoort used to be. The oldest preserved tombstone dates from 1804, but the cemetery is older: it was decorated in 1793. When entering the cemetery, your attention is immediately drawn to a red tombstone in the middle of the cemetery. However, it is unknown who is buried, as the stone is completely blank. During a restoration, the letters on the headstones were painted black, making them legible again. Opposite the cemetery is the monument De tochtgenoten, by Hubert van Lith, which was erected to commemorate the Jewish Edammers who died during the Second World War.

This tower of the Onze Lieve Vrouwe or Kleine Kerk dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. As early as 1350, mention was made of a church or chapel on this site. The church itself was demolished in 1882, but the stone foundation was rebuilt between 2006 and 2007. The slender late Gothic tower bears a carillon from 1561, cast by Pieter van de Ghein from Mechelen. Later the carillon was expanded considerably. That is also the reason that some of the bells hang outside the open lantern. In 1972 a local resident discovered that the tower was in danger of falling, fortunately the danger could be averted in time.

This small shipyard is located in the center of Edam. From the 15th century onwards, numerous ships were built here, culminating in the 16th century. From the 17th century, shipbuilding was gradually moved to cities such as Zaandam and Amsterdam. This yard is the last vestige of this once thriving industry.
