Description
On to Fort Edam
The starting point of this route is at a parking lot on the outskirts of Edam. From here you walk through the center of the city to open farmland and the sea wall on the edge of the Markermeer. You will pass the famous Cheese Market of Edam and the Grote Kerk. A little further on you can take a look at the Fort at Edam, just outside the city. This fort was built between 1908 and 1913 as part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. It is one of the best preserved fortresses in this area.
Historical gems
Then you walk through the center of Edam again. Take a look at the Edam Museum to learn more about the rich history of Edam, admire the old Town Hall or imagine yourself in times gone by at Scheepswerf Groot, the only remaining shipyard in Edam. Your tour ends at the parking lot where you started your walk.
Practical information
During the breeding season from March 15 to June 15, the Zeedampad through the Zeevang polder is closed. You can then follow an alternative route indicated with yellow stickers. This alternative path is 3.5 kilometers long and accessible for wheelchairs.
Height Profile
In Laag Holland are the rustic villages of yesteryear. While cycling you will find Dutch history in the beautiful straight polder lines and the protected city and village views. Low Holland is a national landscape. The Defense Line of Amsterdam and the Beemster have been placed on the World Heritage list by UNESCO.
