Description

Take a stroll through farmland and past rugged meadows, an old lock and spots with dike breaches. This route runs through Het Twiske, a wet and open area full of meadow, water and reed birds.

The Twiskemolen
The starting point of this route is on the edge of Het Twiske. This recreational area has been constructed between the peat areas in this region. From here you walk along the water to the Twiskemolen. This is a thatched watermill from 1572 and one of the few still working polder mills in the Netherlands. From here you walk along the water and through the quiet nature of Het Twiske. Here you can relax wonderfully. After walking about 4 kilometers you can take a break at Twiske Haven with a cup of coffee or something else.

From swamp to recreational area
The peat land in this area used to be a lot more swampy and rough. This has led to the name'Marsen\\\', a muddle of the English word for swamp'marsh\\\' and the French word for swamp'marais\\\'. The Twiske recreational area was created here from 1972 and then this area became less rugged. In the last part of the route you can go to Café De Drie Zwanen to relax with something tasty.

Practical information
The route is marked with black posts with green arrows. Here you will find some options to shorten the route, marked with green arrows on a white background. During the breeding season (March 15-June 15), part of the route runs differently. This is indicated with signs. Dogs must always be on a leash, except at dog walking areas. Dogs are not allowed on the beaches.
