Description

This route takes you across Wieringen, the former island where the Afsluitdijk comes ashore in North Holland. You walk here through a rolling green moraine landscape that was formed during the penultimate ice age, about 150,000 years ago. From the Waddendijk you have a beautiful view over the Wadden Sea. In good weather you can see the Kop van Noord Holland and Texel. Inside the dike you look out over the bird area De Broekerpolder. You walk on farmland paths through vast arable lands. Sometimes the wind blows, sometimes hedgerows protect you against the sea wind. Along the way you will certainly stop a few times to take a closer look at the historic Wieringer farms. From the eastern village of Den Oever you have a view of the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer. You can also take a look at the Afsluitdijk and the defenses of the Stelling van Den Oever. You start and end this 17-kilometer route at Kerkplein in Hippolytushoef.
