Description

Het Bildt is one of the oldest polders in our country. The name comes from opgebild, which means silted up. The local residents are happy to tell you that you are not in, but on Het Bildt!

Middelzee
Your walk today takes you through the polder of Het Bildt. This area was once part of the Middelzee. Due to the construction of dikes, the mouth of this sea has been increasingly dried up since the beginning of the sixteenth century.

Noarderleech
You walk through the Noarderleech, which is part of the Noard-Fryslân Bûtendyks nature reserve. It is one of the largest salt marsh areas in Europe and consists of summer polders, salty grasslands and mudflats. You will see many birds passing through, such as geese, black horsebacks and curlews. The often salty plants give the landscape a special appearance. From the dikes it is clearly visible that the land used to be symmetrically parceled out. Look back in Oudebildtzijl at the old church.
