The idyllic mound landscape

With this route you experience the characteristic landscape north of the city of Groningen. In this region, man has fought for land against the sea for centuries. One of the weapons that the people of Groningen used was building mounds: an artificial elevation to stay dry at high tide. The mounds have been preserved around the villages of Winsum and Baflo. With this mound route you can see how the old people of Groningen shaped their landscape through hard work. From the polder you have a beautiful view of the centuries-old church towers built on mounds of the villages you pass through. The sea may have been tamed, but the wind still has free rein in this landscape. During this walk you can get a breath of fresh air. Just below Tinallinge you walk into the nature reserve of the same name, where many meadow birds nest. In the spring, redshanks, godwits and oystercatchers breed here. You can see them clearly from the path, especially if you use binoculars. On this route you will also see some monumental buildings, such as old mansions. Moreover, the center of Winsum is a protected villagescape, so it is worth viewing at your leisure. The route starts and ends at Winsum railway station.
