Description

Hulst is quite close to the Belgian border and you notice that. It is perhaps the most Flemish city in the Netherlands. Various reorganizations and border changes have resulted in a pleasant Dutch-Flemish mix in terms of culture.

The history of Hulst
The starting point of this route is in Hulst. This city was not originally fortified, but over the years it grew into an impressive defense structure. Strongholds and ramparts were built around the city, making Hulst an almost impregnable city. Hulst was permanently occupied by soldiers for defense. This good defense is perhaps the reason why so many beautiful sights from earlier times have been preserved in this city. For example, view the ancient city walls, the city gates from the 18th century or one of the old forts.

The rest of the route takes you through the beautiful countryside of Hulst. For example, you pass through the nature reserve Het Verdronken Land van Saefthinge, the largest salt marsh area in Europe.
