Description
This route through the Ruigenhilse polder takes you past the nicest regional shops full of local delicacies. While enjoying the vast polder landscape, you will also discover beautiful places, such as the special fortress De Hel and the fortified city of Willemstad.
The Ruigenhilse polder
From a rugged nature reserve at the beginning of the 16th century to a reclaimed area full of creeks around the new village of Ruigenhil, the current Willemstad.William of Orange fortified the village of Ruigenhil into a fortified town. The surrounding Ruigenhilse polder retained its name and became an important weapon in the fight against the Dutch enemy.
Inundation
As part of the Zuiderwaterlinie, this polder was flooded several times, such as in 1793 in an attempt to stop the French.Height Profile
