Cycling through Appingedam and surroundings

Old wierde villages, views over the Ems and a wide polder landscape: you will experience it all with this beautiful bike tour through Appingedam and the surrounding area.

Picturesque Appingedam
Appingedam is a picturesque old town where you almost trip over the national monuments, such as in the Solwerderstraat. Step off here every now and then to take a good look at the characteristic buildings. From the bridge on the Kniestraat you can take a look at the famous kitchens that hang above the Damsterdiep. You also drive along the quay of this canal in Delfzijl. The story goes that the Belgian writer Georges Simenon invented his character Maigret on a boat in the Damsterdiep.

Wierde villages
Cycling through Groningen wierde villages you see many characteristic buildings. The beautiful church in Holwierde is one of the oldest in Groningen, dating back to the eleventh century. A little further on, you can get a breath of fresh air on the dike along the Ems while enjoying the view. In Meedhuizen you will pass a striking thirteenth-century church: it is still partly surrounded by moats.

farmsum
As soon as you leave Delfzijl, you cycle through the village of Farmsum. Here you can admire two sights, although you have to pay attention to the first one. There is still a real pillory on the Pijpplein. The copy was used between 1737 and 1854. A little further on you will pass the Aeolus, a monumental flour mill from 1811. The mill was originally located more to the north, but was moved to its current location in the 1970s. During that operation, the wooden superstructure fell to pieces. Afterwards, an almost entirely new octagon was made to replace it. The name of the mill refers to the wind god from Greek and Roman mythology.
