Description
This cross-border cycling tour takes you a bit into Germany, but the largest part of the route runs through the Netherlands. You cycle along the Engbertsdijksvenen, a beautiful nature reserve of approximately 1000 hectares with extensive fens, heathlands and fens.
The Engbertsdijksvenen
You can still find raised bogs in the Engbertsdijksvenen. In most places in the Netherlands, raised peat has disappeared due to peat extraction, but the excavation of the peat remained limited in this area. There are many special plants such as peat fluff, sundew, cranberry and several types of orchids. You will also find birds in abundance, such as the bluethroat, the common crane, the taiga bean goose and the black-eared grebe. On the rest of the bike ride you will pass typical Dutch windmills such as the Grote Geesterse Molen and the Molen van Frans. At the last mill you will find more information about the flora and fauna around the Mosbeek.
