Description

On this cycle route you explore the beaches from the south of The Hague to Hoek van Holland, and the coastal area between Hoek van Holland and Maassluis. It is the ultimate opportunity to get a breath of fresh air and immerse yourself in the pleasant seaside resorts of South Holland, while seeing a large part of the province. Hoek van Holland in particular is known for its beautiful waters, nature and dune areas, not to mention the beaches. The area originated as a sandbank in the mouth of the Meuse, which became increasingly silted up after the St. Elisabeth flood of 1421. The development of the city as a seaside resort began after the First World War and you can now enjoy many beautiful, varied nature reserves along the coast. The Oranjekanaal, De Zeven Meren, the Staelduinse Bos, the Kapittelduinen and the beaches are just a selection of the many recreational options that Hoek van Holland offers.

Another special stop is Fort aan den Hoek van Holland. This former armored fort was built in 1881 and has a turbulent history. The fortress had to protect the Nieuwe Waterweg against an enemy fleet and could also defend the beach in the event of an invasion. The defense was equipped with six guns, which were positioned in one of the three revolving armored turrets. Although the Netherlands remained neutral during the First World War, the fort was made ready for combat. During the Second World War there was real fighting around the fort, and after the Dutch capitulation the Germans used the fortress. The domes, guns and all other metal were removed from the fort at that time and were melted down in German industry. The Dutch Coastal Defense Museum has been located in the fort since 1987.

The Oude Liermolen, or the Mill of the Oude Lierpolder (rump/remains), or the Blakermolen. These are all names that refer to the stone ground sailor that was built in De Lier in 1717. It was the third mill to be built on this site. Together with another mill, this national monument drained the Oude Lierpolder in its heyday. After the mill was dismantled in 1929, the white mill hull was made suitable as a housing for a diesel engine. If necessary, the pumping station can still be used.
