Zeeland is known for the imposing Delta Works that were built here to protect the land against the water. This route takes you past two dams that are part of these structures.

On the road across the Delta Works
The starting point of this route is in Oosterland. From here you set course for the Grevelingenmeer and the Grevelingendam delta work. Along the way you can enjoy the vastness of the landscape. On the dam you can settle down at Restaurant PUURR by Rich to enjoy a snack and a drink by the water. The Grevelingenmeer was an estuary of the North Sea before the construction of the Delta Works. Today it is the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe. A little further on you cycle across the Deltawerk Philipsdam. This dam was constructed between 1976 and 1987 to close off the Krammer and Volkerak waters from the Oosterschelde.

Museum Flood 1953
You then continue cycling along the edge of the Oosterschelde. Visit the Watersnood 1953 Museum to learn more about the Delta Works and the flood disaster in Zeeland.

The Oriental Mill
The tour takes you further to the Oosterlandse mill. This mill in Oosterland was built in 1752 as a replacement for a standard mill. The ground sailer is equipped with two pairs of grinding stones. The mill has been operated by a volunteer miller since its dissolution as a business. That miller died in early December 2013. As soon as a new volunteer has been found, the mill will start running again.

Molen Oosterland is a flour mill that was built in 1752 as a replacement for a post mill. The mill is occasionally still operated by a miller.

Deltawerk Grevelingendam

4311 NN Schouwen-Duiveland

The Grevelingenmeer is a former estuary of the North Sea and the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe. The lake is located between the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland, on the border of South Holland and Zeeland. As part of the Delta Works, the Grevelingenmeer has been cut off from the sea by the Grevelingendam (1965) and the Brouwersdam (1971) and the estuary has become a lake. The lake is a Natura 2000 protected area.

Deltawerk Philipsdam

Philipsdam
4311 RS Schouwen-Duiveland

The Philipsdam is part of the Delta Works. With the construction of the Philipsdam, the Wateren Krammer and Volkerak were immediately cut off from the Eastern Scheldt. The Philipsdam runs from the Grevelingendam to the Sint-Philipsland. The locks are technically complicated, because they must prevent an exchange between the fresh water of the Volkerak and the salt water of the Oosterschelde. The construction of the dam has significantly changed the landscape around it. Silting has created salt marshes with a rich animal life.
