This beautiful route introduces you to a different side of Friesland: the Gaasterland, a sloping and wooded area. You can also enjoy the characteristic wide Frisian lake area.
Fortified town of Sloten
A little further on, you can enjoy the historic atmosphere in the old core of Balk. The poet Herman Gorter also enjoyed it here: his poem Mei is an ode to Balk. You also pass Sloten, which exudes a wonderful historical atmosphere with its 50 national monuments. Almost everything of the original walls and structure is still there, wow!
In the cozy restaurant De Baai van Lemmer you can make a stopover at the IJsselmeer. From the terrace you have a view of passing boats. In Nijemirdum you see a solitary church tower from the fourteenth century. Ahead you enter the rolling Gaasterland. You drive through Elfbergen, the Lycklamabos and the Starnumanbossen: three beautiful contiguous forests. How wonderfully quiet it is here!
