Your cycling route starts on the terrace of Eethuis en Cafetaria't Veen in Helenaveen. Here, on the border of North Brabant and Limburg, are the remains of a raised bog area that covered more than 30,000 hectares centuries ago. A small part of this is the Deurnsche Peel / Mariapeel. Due to peat extraction, there are peeling canals, peat pits and water ponds in an overgrown heathland area, which attract rare butterflies and dragonflies. You can learn more about De Peel in Museum De Peelstreek, with a collection of machines, tools and utensils from farms. And you pass Griendtsveen, a small hamlet with only a few inhabitants. The village was founded around 1885, when the Peel was reclaimed. Griendtsveen is therefore probably the only village in Peel that does not have an agricultural background.

Eethuis en Cafeteria't Veen is located on the Helenavaart, in the middle of the Brabant mining village of Helenaveen. Nearby are the beautiful Pelen: extensive peat areas where you can still find an old-fashioned peace. A real surprise for those who are not yet familiar with this area! And those who have already been there need no encouragement to return. So come (again) for a nice walk and cycle through this striking and unique area. And at the end enjoy a well-deserved meal or drink on the beautiful terrace at Eethuis and Cafeteria't Veen!
