Description

The Nijmegen Four Day Walking Event - in full the International Four Day Distance Marches Nijmegen - is a household name. Would you like to see the beautiful routes that the runners take by bike? Which can! Route.nl has plotted cycling routes along the route of the longest daily distances of the Four Days Marches! The Four Days Marches has a different route every day through Gelderland, Brabant or Limburg, in the wider area surrounding the city of Nijmegen. Each walking day focuses on a different place in the Nijmegen area. The first walking day is called The Day of Elst, the second The Day of Wijchen, the third The Day of Groesbeek and finally the fourth The Day of Cuijk. This route leads you through the beautiful landscape of Wijchen and is therefore called De dag van Wijchen; the route of day two of the Four Days Marches. You will pass through this lovely village twice, so be sure to find time to stop by Wijchen Castle with the museum on the way there or back. Here you will learn everything about the archaeology, contemporary art and regional history of the region. Wijchen is very special because of the Roman villa landscape. In Roman times, the territory of Wijchen consisted of a large number of small settlements. Over time, some wealthy Romans settled here in luxurious villas. This alternation of native and Roman habitation makes Wijchen very special. Wijchen is a pleasant village to have a drink or browse in the shops. Outside Wijchen you make a beautiful bend along the water - a nice spot to stop at Logis Hotel-Restaurant Hoogeerd and enjoy a coffee or lunch with a view over the Maas. The loop to Nijmegen is also worth it. Along the way you will pass the only remaining part of the house in Hatert, the 14th century square tower. It is a two-story brick tower. In Nijmegen itself you will pass close to the Velorama National Cycling Museum, a must for real cycling enthusiasts. Nowhere in Western Europe will you find such an extensive collection of bicycles and accessories as in this historic building on the Waalkade. Take the opportunity to take a look around Het Valkhof, historically perhaps the most interesting place in the Netherlands. Almost the entire history of Western Europe can be read from this strategic hill, which towers high above the Waal. The construction history of the successive forms of habitation on the Valkhof is one of Nijmegen's best-kept secrets. Due to the continuity since prehistory on an area of limited size, every era has left its mark.
