Sea, beach, dunes, wind, nature, space and openness: Schouwen-Duiveland has it all. Beautiful views over the water and the wind blowing in the dunes alternate with the flat, wide interior, characteristic villages and pleasant hamlets. You follow the coastal strip during the first part of the route and then cycle from village to village. With a bit of luck you will see a bat, and you will probably encounter one or more Shetlanders. Those interested in cultural history will also be amazed at the value of Schouwen-Duiveland in this area, because the tour takes you past a beautiful castle. Slot Haamstede is an old castle that dates back to the thirteenth century. In 1525 the castle was almost completely destroyed by a fire, so the castle had to be rebuilt. The current fortress was therefore mainly built in the sixteenth century. The castle was last restored in 1973 and in 1981 it came into the hands of the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten. What is special is that the only deciduous forest of Schouwen-Duivenland can be found on the estate of Slot Haamstede.

Opposite the church, in the middle of the village of Haamstede, is Slot Haamstede. The oldest part of the current castle dates from the 13th century. The other parts were added in the following centuries. Traces of the Romans and Normans have even been found on the castle island! Now the castle and the accompanying estate are owned by Natuurmonumenten. The lock is normally closed to visitors. You can view it during Heritage Days. You can also take a guided walk around the estate.
