Cycling through the woods near Amerongen

Between Rhenen, Amerongen and Veenendaal it is wonderful to cycle through the vast forests on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Get on the saddle for a day full of natural beauty, cultural history and views.

Leersum Field
The first kilometers you drive through the varied landscape along the foot of the Amerongse Berg. After you've relaxed your legs, you cycle through the woods and heathland of the Leersumse Veld. Remarkably, the heath here is grazed by a herd of Piedmontese cows.

Castle Amerongen
On the other side of the hills you drive past Leersum and through the old center of Amerongen. What a rich cultural history you will find here! You will see Amerongen Castle, which originally dates from 1286. Here the German Emperor Wilhelm II signed the form by which he abdicated his imperial position. You will also pass the twelfth-century Andries Church. You then enjoy the beautiful forests again, before you drive past Rhenen and the Rhine to Achterberg.
