Description
Just outside Roermond it is wonderful to cycle through the border region with Germany. This route takes you through De Meinweg and some worth seeing villages.
Roerdalen
A gently sloping region where the landscape consists of a mix of fields, grasslands, stream valleys and forests. A region that is not yet very well known, despite the fact that it is wonderful to cycle here. At the Roer you pass the Vlodroppermolen, a watermill from 1875.
Castle Hillenraad
A little later you drive into the woods that lie on the edge of De Meinweg. In the visitor center you will find plenty of information about this national park. In the adjacent forests of the Luzenkamp you drive a bit on the border between Germany and the Netherlands. Castle Hillenraad is a square moated castle that originally dates from the fourteenth century. During the Eighty Years' War, William of Orange led the siege of Roermond from this castle. The cottage is privately owned.
