This route takes you across Vlieland, a versatile island of tranquility and nature. Here the elements have free rein and you can really get a breath of fresh air and recharge. Enjoy the salty scent of the Wadden Sea, the fresh breeze that blows over the North Sea and the sweet air of the pine forests by bike. The first part of your route you make a small trip along Kroon\\\'s polders. The brackish water of the Kroon\\\'s polders provides a unique vegetation and countless birds find a place to breed. Between the reeds and the grass and along the water you will find the nests of more than 60 bird species, including eiders, spoonbills, avocets and cormorants. You cycle along the Wadden Sea and then cross over to the other side of the island through the dunes with their versatile vegetation. In the drifting dunes near the sea you will find marram, sand oats and blue sea thistles. Elderberry bushes and sea buckthorn bushes grow in the young dune valleys beyond. Crow heather and polypody grow in the older dunes, but also lichens and heaths. The forest on Vlieland was planted at the beginning of the 20th century to prevent the drifting of the dune sand. Today, much of the pine forest is replaced by deciduous trees to prevent soil drying out through evaporation. In the marina of Vlieland you can get off your bike for a cup of coffee with homemade cakes, a festive cocktail with tapas or a delicious dinner. At Port Pavilion De Dining you have a breathtaking view of the Wadden Sea and the countless ships in the marina. You immediately get the real Vlieland feeling. The only village on the island is Oost-Vlieland. The second village, West-Vlieland, was swallowed up by the sea in 1736. Museum Tromp\\\'s Huys used to be home to commissioners of the Admiralty, the 14th-century authority over the fleet. The Norwegian artist Betzy Akersloot-Berg also lived in this oldest building in Vlieland. The museum, with its historic interior, shows changing exhibitions alongside her work. You will also find a museum shop there. In De Noordwester, Information Center you can learn everything about Vlieland and its nature, history and inhabitants. You can marvel at a huge sperm whale skeleton, a sea aquarium, the largest sand collection in the Netherlands, an exhibition by Staatsbosbeheer, beachcomber treasures, wreck finds and much more. You can also go there for excursions through Kroon\\\'s polders accompanied by a guide from Staatsbosbeheer.
