Katwijk, South Holland, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 1523225
Provided by: Groots Genieten
You first follow the boulevard south – what a place! From here, you walk to the Wassenaarse Slag through Berkheide, a nature reserve consisting of small valleys and parabolic dunes. In some places, bushes and thickets grow. Striking are the many wild roses that bloom in spring. And the former agricultural fields where dune pipits were grown. You'll also encounter many remnants from the Second World War. Not surprising, as the Atlantic Wall ran through this area. Some old bunkers now serve as hibernation sites for bats. Katwijk is home to a wealth of monuments and attractions, such as old churches, the Spinoza House, and of course, the dune landscape. You'll also walk through the wooded Pan van Persijn dune area.
