Description

In Twente Ootmarsum you will find the charming small-scale character that is so characteristic of this region. Around 770 one of the first churches in Twente was built here and in the Middle Ages trade in Ootmarsum flourished due to the favourable location of the town. The rise of industry in Twente passed Ootmarsum by, which is why the former charm has been preserved. The old nostalgic city centre revives old times and it is therefore wonderful to cycle 'back in time' for a while. Just north of Ootmarsum lies the nature reserve Springendal. The area covers approximately 355 hectares and is known for its springs, streams, hills and burial mounds. On the border with Germany lies an open piece of heathland, the Paardenslenkte. Natural spring water rises in three places in the nature reserve, these places can be recognised by the forest lakes that can be found there. A visit to the Openluchtmseum Ootmarsum is also very nice. Here you can experience rural life in Twente as it was a hundred years ago, but the museum also tells the story of the administrators of the past: the bailiff, the mayor of the palace and the commander. In the museum restaurant you can sit down and rest for a while before continuing your journey and going to the Molen van Bels. This overshot watermill was built in 1725 as a corn and paper mill. From the middle of the nineteenth century, chicory was also ground in the mill. The adjacent mill pond was constructed in 1874. In 1914, the mill was converted into a turbine mill. Nowadays, the mill houses a restaurant and tea room. An exhibition about Overijssel mills can be seen in an outbuilding. The Molen van Frans is also an overshot watermill. The mill is located near the Molen van Bels on the Mosbeek and has even more similarities with that mill: the mill of Bels also dates from 1725 and it was also used as a corn and paper mill. Since 1963, the mill has been owned by the Landschap Overijssel foundation. This foundation has completely restored the mill and has housed a permanent exhibition about the history of the mill. There is also information about the flora and fauna around the Mosbeek. The mill can be visited on Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00. At Landgoed de Holtweijde you can book a stay for a wonderful cycling holiday. In the middle of the coulisse landscape, a stone's throw from all kinds of special places to discover, this beautiful four-star hotel rises. The swimming pool can even call itself the most beautiful indoor swimming pool in the Netherlands, the sauna is on when you return from your bike ride. Route 151258 also starts and ends here, so that you can start that trip the next day well rested.
