Description

The Deurnse Peel and the Mariapeel are the remains of what was once an inhospitable raised bog area. Peat was very valuable as fuel, hence the nickname 'the black gold of the Peel'. Reclamation of the area began in the Middle Ages. The area used to be inhospitable, but now it is a bird-rich nature reserve. The experienced birdwatcher can spot the bluethroat, grasshopper warbler, shoveler, pochard, curlew, water rail and teal. In winter the Taiga bean goose visits and during migration time the crane uses the area as a stopping place. You can park your car for free at the beginning and end of the cycle route at Natuurpoort De Peel. If the weather is nice, you can enjoy the last rays of sunshine on the terrace with a drink after your bike ride!
