From Nisse to Middelburg

The first part of this Zeeland tour takes you through the picturesque area of De Zak van Zuid-Beveland. Then you continue your way to Middelburg on the former island of Walcheren. You cycle through an endless polder landscape full of dikes and hedges and visit the towns of Ovezande, 's-Heerenhoek, Nieuwdorp, Oudedorp, Middelburg, Arnemuiden, Lewedorp and Heinkenszand along the way. The route starts at B&B Buitenhuis De Weeltjes. The house is located on a lake in a nature reserve. It is therefore a wonderful base for cycling routes. Then, after a comfortable overnight stay, you can continue cycling the next day with route 147817, which also starts from this point. On this ride you cycle through the Zak van Zuid-Beveland, one of the oldest polder landscapes in the Netherlands. It is especially popular in the spring because of the beautifully blooming fruit trees. In the small-scale landscape, fields and fields are surrounded by dikes and hawthorn hedges. The system of winding dikes was created from the 12th century onwards as a result of centuries of battle against the water and forms a beautiful patchwork in the landscape. The Zak van Zuid-Beveland has the status of Valuable Cultural Landscape and belongs to the National Landscape of Southwest Zeeland. You cycle through Middelburg, the city on Walcheren that is bisected by the Canal through Walcheren. The eye-catcher in the city is the Middelburg Abbey with its more than 90 meter high tower, the Lange Jan, for many the symbol of Middelburg. Middelburg has a protected cityscape and apart from the historic city center, you can also enjoy the many shops, restaurants and cafes in the city. You also visit Arnemuiden. Although only part of the population still lives from fishing, Arnemuiden is still known as a fishing village. Some people still wear traditional costumes every day.
