Description

Follow the banks of the Yser, the only river in Belgium that flows into the North Sea. The total length of the water mass that makes its way to the coast is 78 kilometers. The water can be wild, but also mysterious and soothing. Cycling along the banks, looking out over the gigantic mass of water, this ancient force of nature will awaken something in many tourists. Following the water, you cycle to'butter city\\\' Diksmuide. Diksmuide is a city known as the"Butter City\\\". A flourishing dairy trade was one of the most important pillars of prosperity in Diksmuide for centuries and the municipality has a mainly agricultural character. Diksmuide only really gained fame during their strategic contribution during the First World War. Diksmuide fought hard in the Battle of the Yser. A notorious trench complex is the Trench of Death, which was one of the most dangerous positions of the Belgian army. The Yser Tower, which was built after the war, first houses the fallen Flemish soldiers and serves as a peace monument.
