The picturesque landscape of Winterswijk
43.95 km (Approximately 02:35 u)
This ride through the semi-open bocage landscape of the Achterhoek takes you through the Winterswijk National Landscape. This picturesquely beautiful region has been named a Valuable Cultural Landscape. You cycle through bushes, avenues and hedgerows and along meandering streams in narrow valleys. Beautiful, old farms and small hamlets are scattered across the country. Halfway through this versatile route you take a look over the border at our eastern neighbors. The ride starts at Restaurant Berenschot\\\'s Watermolen. In the atmospheric restaurant you sit between the cog wheels of the old water mill and you can hear the old mill wheel creaking. The terrace offers a view of the Slingebeek. Start your ride with a nice cup of coffee or a fresh drink or settle down afterwards for a delicious meal. Good to know: the restaurant has a charging point for electric bicycles. The Berenschot mill is an undershot water mill. The National Monument is located in the Knownelle nature reserve. The mill was built in 1652 as part of the Plekenpol manor and was rebuilt in 1749. The front of the mill is in the 1920s or 1930s in the Art Deco style. Windmill De Meenkmolen is a belt mill from 1851. In 1883 the flour company was expanded with a mill and a sawmill. First they were powered by a steam engine, later by a diesel engine. The mill buildings are next to the mill. Grain is still ground on a voluntary basis with wind power. Near the German border you can stretch your legs at Pannenkoekenboerderij Harmienehoeve. In the traditional and child-friendly inn you can enjoy well-filled pancakes or a real Achterhoek vespermoaltied. But you are also at the right place for a bouncer, soup or a nice fresh drink. When the weather is nice, you can sit on the terrace and fully recharge for the rest of your ride. At junction 22 you cycle past an open quarry. Of the three quarries, which have been excavated since 1932, one is still in use. The other two are managed as nature reserves. The groundwater is pumped from the eastern and oldest quarry. All kinds of special animals and plants have settled here. The two watermills of the Oliemolle in Winterswijk are located on the water of the old Berkel. They belonged to the property of the Heerlijkheid Borculo and came into the possession of the Van Bronckhorst family towards the end of the 14th century. One of the mills now houses a bistro and the wheel still turns regularly. Would you like to see more of this beautiful area? Routes 122481 and 114963 also pass through this picturesque landscape with its special sights and gastronomic stops.
