Description
On this route through the Belgian coastal area you cycle through Westende and Westende-Bad, on the Belgian North Sea coast. The seaside resort of Westende really developed in 1888 when a Brussels industrialist purchased 64 hectares of dunes and had a sea wall built there. The place was expanded with tennis courts, a church, a post office, a power station and the Ostend-Middelkerke tram line was extended to Westende.
A second expansion of the seaside resort came in 1905, with the arrival of the new Grand Hotel Belle Vue, or De Rotonde. On the eve of the First World War, Westende was a beautiful, elite seaside resort with two Grand Hotels and hundreds of villas. However, it suffered much destruction during the war. Westende was rebuilt in the 1920s and 1930s. Not much is left of the stately old villas: the seaside resort is now completely attuned to the new era and contemporary tourism, mainly with high-rise buildings.
At Middelkerke-Bad you turn inland again and continue the tour through the Belgian coastal area with its open polder plains, dotted with small villages and old chapels.
