Description

Your route starts at Camping De Waay. You cycle past the Havezate Camphuysen estate, the oldest parts of which date from the fourteenth century. The imposing Kasteel Doornenburg, with its outer and main castle, connected by a narrow wooden bridge, is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in the Netherlands. It was built in the 13th century, as an extension of a fortified house that already stood here in the 9th century. Huis Aerdt dates from 1652. You will also discover more recent heritage, such as Fort Pannerden. This fort was completed in 1872. It is surrounded by a moat and pollard willows. It is the successor of a medieval castle that was destroyed in the 16th century. L44: No Bricks for the Enemy is a listening point from the Liberation Route.
