Description
According to historians, the rural outlying area between the Meuse and the German border was an important port for the Normans. They ruled for some time in the area around Asselt, which was then called Ascloa. This route takes you through this special historic area.
Cycling along the Maas
The dragon village of Beesel, on the east side of the Maas, is the starting point of this route. In 2014, this village earned the title of Greenest Village in the Netherlands. From here you follow the course of the Maas where you pass the mill De Grauwe Beer and get acquainted with the lovely village of Asselt with the Sint Dionysiuskerk, or the'Rozenkerkje\\\'. Nothing here reminds you of the scenes from the time when you found a heavily armed Norman fortress here. Stories from the past can be heard at so-called listening points, including about the'dark Pact of Asselt.\\\'
Enjoying the water
Now it is especially lovely along the Maas by bike or on one of the beautiful terraces on the water with a snack. In winter you can admire many waterfowl that winter near the Meuse and from here you can cross the border to Brachterwald and the town of Brüggen in no time. Plenty of options in this green area.

At the end of the route you will return to Beesel. This is the only place in the Netherlands where the age-old tradition of Dragon stabbing is still honored. Once every seven years, a grand open-air theater performance is held here that revolves around the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. Brave Joris defeats the dragon that steals a child every night to eat it.
