From Kleit (Maldegem) a visit to Bruges

The imposing neo-Gothic Ryckevelde Castle was built in 1929. The Ryckevelde estate is 120 ha in size. Part of the area is military domain and the forests are partly protected nature reserve. You will find forests, heath remnants and an inner dune or inland dune: the Wit Zand or the Schobbejakshoogte. There is also a Heemtuin, a deciduous forest with local species. The oldest tree in the region, called'Dikke Bertha\\\', stands on the old emergency landing strip. The robust-looking Male is a castle from the 12th century, although a motte castle was already on this site in the 9th century as a defence against the Vikings. Over the centuries, the castle has been destroyed, rebuilt and changed owners several times. From 1954, the Sint-Trudo Abbey settled in the castle. The current castle tower dates from the 16th century and one of the added wings from the 17th century. You cycle on to picturesque Bruges. The historic city centre of Bruges is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a medieval city. The city centre has been beautifully preserved, with many neo-Gothic buildings from the 19th century. It is truly a city to come home to and take your time to look around. For shopping enthusiasts there are many markets and shops and the bon vivants can visit the numerous restaurants and the cosy terraces. All this against the backdrop of a beautiful cityscape full of picturesque streets, historic buildings and romantic canals. A cycling destination par excellence!
