Through the former peat area of North Twente

Around Vriezenveen you can take a beautiful bike ride through the former peat area of northern Twente. You drive through varied landscapes, and along the way you visit a museum where you learn more about the regional mining history.

Valley of the Mosbeek
The route starts at Bistro Festa. Enjoy a drink and snack here before driving to the mining villages of Kloosterhaar and Langeveen. You will gradually see the landscape change and the vast Twentse Hooilanden make way for the rolling Mosbeek Valley. Just a stone's throw apart you will pass two special water mills from 1725: the Bels Mill and the Frans Mill. You feel like you're back in time here.

Peat Museum
Further on you drive into the authentic farming landscape of the Twentse Hooilanden again. How wonderfully peaceful it is here! You pass through Vriezenveen, a village many of whose inhabitants traded heavily with Saint Petersburg between 1720 and 1917. Peat Museum Het Vriezenveense Veld is a unique small-scale outdoor museum. Here you will learn more about life during the time of peat farming in North Twente (1850-1950). Finally, you will pass the Engbertsdijksvenen, a unique nature reserve.
