Description

This versatile route takes you through the Liemers, the area west of the Oude IJssel. Along the way you will visit historical sights and you can get acquainted with the delicious wines that this region produces. The last part of the route takes you through the beautiful wooded area of Montferland. The largest part of the area De Liemers consists of a river plain from the last Ice Age. It is an area with extensive fields and meadows, interspersed with small forest complexes. The fertile land consists largely of river clay. For good quality wines you do not have to go to Southern Europe, South Africa or South America. You simply cycle along the vineyards of the eastern Netherlands to taste all the good things that this region has to offer in terms of wine. This cycle route takes you past Wijngaard Bergherbos, Wijngoed't Oerlegoed and Wijngoed Avitera. Let yourself be surprised and pampered by delicious grape juice from Dutch soil. In the heart of Zeddam is the Volharding mill, dating from 1891. The white, stone belt mill ground on wind power until 1941, after which it went out of operation. The mill was restored in 1979. Grain is now ground and sold on a voluntary basis and you can visit the mill when the sails are turning and on Sundays. The imposing Kasteel Huis Bergh is one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. Construction began in 1250. Parts of the house date from the 14th, 15th and 17th centuries. There are guided tours of the castle and the art collection includes early Italian paintings, works from the school of Hieronymus Bosch and medieval manuscripts. You can also get married there and spend the night in luxurious suites in the two defensive towers on the outer bailey. The last part of your route takes you through the hilly forest area of Montferland. This moraine complex was created during the Ice Age. You will find a number of wooded hills, of which the Hettenheuvel is the highest at 91.6 metres. For the cyclist it is therefore sometimes a matter of pedalling hard, to then whizz down the hill in a wonderfully relaxed way.
