From Ronse along the Scheldt to Oudenaarde

This trip takes you through the Flemish Ardennes in the vicinity of Ronse. Straight through the green surroundings you set course for the cozy Oudenaarde. You cycle through the Kluisbos on top of the Kluisberg, among other things. This 141 meter high mountain is one of the showpieces of this area.
Textile city Ronse
The starting point of this route is in Ronse. Here you will find, among other things, the Sint-Hermeskerk with one of the best preserved crypts in Western Europe. This crypt served as a repository for the relics of Saint Hermes, patron saint of the nervous and mentally ill. In the Middle Ages, Ronse was an important place of pilgrimage, but later it became a textile city. You will learn more about the textile history of the city in the Must, a textile museum. A little further on you cycle through the Kluisbergen. In this hilly area you will find the Hotondberg, the Kluisberg and a forest area of 120 hectares. This area is right on the language border.
Historic Oudenaarde
You then cycle through the Scheldt valley to Oudenaarde on the left bank of the Scheldt. In this city of art you can admire all kinds of historical sights. Take a look at the town hall with the cloth hall, the Huis De Lalaing with Oudenaarde tapestries, the Church of Pamele, the Begijnhof or the Liedts Castle.
The Kluisbos
The Kluisbos suffered a lot of blows during the First World War, but also later due to the extraction of sand and fieldstone. With a well-thought-out nature management plan, open spaces are created in the thick, sun-resistant canopy and other types of vegetation are given the opportunity to develop again. Part of the Kluisbos is a forest reserve. Here, nature is allowed to take its course unchecked. Fallen trees remain in place and thus form a shelter for many insects.
