Description

De Maasduinen National Park is a terraced landscape on an elongated, high sand ridge between the Maas and the German border. It consists of lower and higher sandy soils, the Meuse valley and a plateau. The Hamert estate forms the heart of the woods and heaths that cover approximately 45 hectares. The forests are kept young in a natural way with Galloway cattle, sheep and goats. In Afferden you can drink a cup of coffee before you continue your bike ride, to Castle Well in the village of the same name. During the Second World War, the castle, which consists of a main castle and an outer castle, was badly damaged. Both buildings were restored and placed on the National Monuments List, as well as the bridges, the tithe barn and the historic garden that belong to the fortress.
