Look out over one of the longest rivers that makes its way through Europe to the sea. The Rhine is 1233 kilometres long and rises in the Swiss Alps, where two source rivers (the Vorderrhein and the Hinterrhein) feed the stream that eventually flows through the Netherlands. You will also discover Fort Pannerden. This fort was built in the years 1869 to 1871. Fort Pannerden was built to guard the junction of the Pannerdensch Kanaal (the Rhine) and the Waal and to slow down the advance of enemies. The first designs of the fort date from 1819. During WWI the fort was fully occupied. In 1926 the largest part of the fort was moved, except for four cannons: these remained.
