Description
Between Delft and Winschoten you cycle through an open polder area with ribbon villages full of farms. Enjoy this peaceful landscape and get to know Midwolda, Oostwold and many more cozy places along the way. You will also pass beautiful sights such as ancient mills.
The port of Delfzijl
From the starting point of this route you set course for Scheemda. This is one of the few places in this area that is not a ribbon village. From here you continue to Delfzijl via Nieuw-Scheemda and Wagenborgen. In Delfzijl you can take a look at the marina and the associated harbor boulevard. You used to find the trade quay on the site of the harbor boulevard. Here you can enjoy all the activity on the water. In the previous centuries you mainly found large sailing ships here that moored in the harbor after long sea journeys. Those sailing ships were later replaced by steam and motor ships. From Delfzijl you continue cycling to Termunterzijl.
Windmill De Dellen
North of Scheemda you will find windmill De Dellen. This polder mill was built in 1855 as a replacement for a burned down mill. The mill drained De Dellen, a polder of 270 hectares. In 1901 an auxiliary pumping station was built at the polder mill. At the end of the 20th century, the mill was moved to its current location.
