Description
Are you an adventurous cyclist? Then try this route over the winding dikes of the Waal. The nature in this area is influenced by the rough and turbulent character of the river. The river island of Bommelerwaard, for example, is formed by the Waal and the Maas. Between Nieuwwaal and Zuilichem lies the Breemwaard, where you are treated to beautiful views from the dikes with marshes, willow forests and reeds.
Battery under Brakel
In the past, water also played a major role in the defense against the enemy. Battery under Brakel was built between 1879 and 1884 as part of the New Dutch Waterline. The fort served to protect Loevestein Castle and the town of Woudrichem.
The Pancake Baker Woudrichem
Need a break? Then take a seat at De Pannekoekenbakker Woudrichem for a cup of coffee, one of the 230 different pancakes or something else delicious from the menu. From the terrace you have a beautiful view of the Maas. Once you have gained new energy, you can cycle on to Molen Nooit Gedagt. This mill still grinds grain daily. A little later you cycle past Fort Vuren, which was built in 1844 to stop enemies who wanted to move west.
Loevestein Castle
Loevestein Castle is definitely worth a visit. The castle was originally built as a residence in 1357. It was only later that the castle was given a military function, because the castle is strategically well located in the New Dutch Waterline. Loevestein Castle is best known for the story that Hugo de Groot was imprisoned there and escaped via a book chest when the castle was used as a prison. Nowadays the castle is set up as a museum. Children can dress up as a knight or damsel and the story of Hugo de Groot is told especially for them. For the rest, you can view excavations of former residents of the castle, take an audio tour and explore the fortress with your smartphone.
