Fancy a day of cycling in East Groningen? You can have fun in the esdorp landscape of Westerwolde, a former seigniory. You used to find peat colonies here, where the workers lived who dug up peat in the area to make peat.
Brinkdorp Sellingen
Here you cycle through the esdorp landscape of the former peat colonies, where agricultural complexes were constructed on the higher sand ridges. During your ride you will pass through the green village of Sellingen, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Nearby is Ter Borg, an authentic Groningen hamlet that has managed to retain its original identity. In the nearby nature reserve, the largest heathland in Groningen has been spared from reclamation. In addition to sheep, Scottish Highlanders also keep the vegetation short here. Enjoy the tranquility here and relax completely.
Fortress Bourtange
The absolute attraction in this region is of course Bourtange. After Groningen had fallen into Spanish hands, William of Orange had this fortress built on the supply route to Groningen. The fortress retained its military importance until 1851 and after the defensive function was lifted, Bourtange turned into an agricultural village.
