Description
Just outside the city, a wonderful rural area stretches along the banks of the Waal. You cycle here from one nice village to another, along the river and various puddles that were created by thigh vomiting.
Bemmel
Your route starts at Het Wapen, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee with a delicious apple slice on the sunny terrace. Then you go. From the picturesque Bemmel you cycle to the Waal. That mighty river has wreaked havoc here in recent centuries: you will pass the Elferen vortex, which was created in 1551 when a dike breached. A little further on you see the former Fort Boven-Lent from 1862.
Spring
From the dike along the Waal you can see Nijmegen on the horizon. In Lent itself, the village church with its beautiful white tower is worth a visit. Via the Waaiensteinkolk you drive to Oosterhout. Along the Waal you pass through a mosaic of fruit orchards and flowery grasslands. It is wonderful to make miles along the river here, with the occasional view of a beautiful old regional farm. You drive back to Bemmel through the hinterland.
