This cycle route takes you through a beautiful medieval landscape full of culture and nature in Groningen. The area is only separated from the Wadden area by dikes, which were built in the 11th century. In the past, the water could just come and go here, which created elevations in the landscape. After the construction of dikes, people build their lives here. Pay a visit to these wierde villages with 13th-century churches and church towers and get to know the interesting history.

The churches of Oldenzijl and Oosternieland tell the stories of St. Nicholas, protector of children and seafarers. These churches and the church of Uitwierde belong to the Land Marks, eight beautiful collections of historic buildings and beautiful nature. Learn more about the Landmarks with interactive information or explore the geocaches found here.

Maritime and history
The churches and church towers of the oldest wierden Spijk, Bierum and Uitwierde also have their own story. These churches are very close to the water. This provides a beautiful view of the sea, but the risk of flooding is also very high. The church of Spijk even flooded twice. Take a look at the port of Delfzijl if you like seafaring. Or visit Appingedam, an ancient trade and market centre.
